Character Name: RK200 aka Markus
Fandom: Detroit Become Human

Character History: Wiki link for Markus storyline in Detroit Become Human. ooc: The thing with the game Detroit Become Human is that there are multiple choices for each scene, and multiple different endings. What I've put down are the choices and the endings that I took for this version of Markus.

In the not so distant future (2030-something, to be more exact), a company called Cyberlife develops androids. Able to look human, they're smart and can pass all kinds of tests, making them the perfect candidates for different fields of professions throughout the United States, and some other countries. The company, based out of Detroit, begins to make and ship androids for private and public use throughout the United States. This revitalizes Detroit, making it the "Android Capitol" of the world.

RK200 was an android prototype developed by Cyberlife as part of it's secret autonomous android program. RK200, serial number 684 842 971, soon to be named Markus, was a gift from Cyberlife creator Elijah Kamski, to his friend Carl Manfred. Carl was a well renown painter who lost the use of his legs in an accident, and Markus was supposed to be a gift to help him out with daily living. A caretaker who didn't need to be paid, or fed, or given breaks.

At first, Carl was a recluse, having stopped painting and stopped seeing people, and Markus was used only as a companion and caretaker. Over time, however, the two of them began to bond, and Carl set about to teach Markus many different things, like art, music, and about the soul. Carl regains his sense of life and purpose, and eventually Markus and he become like father and son, to the chagrin and anger of Carl's biological son, Leo.

Flash to the year 2038. Markus is minding his own business, taking care of Carl and running errands for him, such as buying groceries or picking up paint for Carl to use in his studio, when he gets stopped by a pack of picketers on the street who are against androids, claiming that they're stealing human jobs and they are dangers to society. This isn't Markus first time dealing with a group like that, seeing as they are becoming more prevalent, but it is the first time he gets roughed up enough that Carl comments it on it when he gets home. This leads to Carl and Markus talking about how one day Carl won't be around to help take care of Markus anymore; something that Markus knows, but doesn't like to think about, because what point is there if Carl isn't around anymore? He helps to pick up around the house some more before they go to the studio, where Carl works some more on a painting that he's been working on, and then has Markus try his hand at painting.

Markus' first attempt is just an exact recreation of something that has already been done, but when Carl has him close his eyes and think of something that inspires him, or makes him think, he comes up with an original painting, and a good one at that. This wonderful father-son moment is broken up by Leo coming in, high and looking for money to help fuel his drug problem. Leo ends up leaving, but not before pushing Markus and accusing Carl of loving his fake son more then his real one.

Sometime later, Carl and Markus come home from a cocktail party to find the lights are on in the studio, when they had most definitely been off when they left. Calling the police, Carl has Markus take him into the studio to investigate what turns out to be Leo once again, breaking into his father's home and stealing artworks to sell. It's here that something pivotal happens in Markus' life. A problem that has been happening with androids lately is something they call 'deviancy', where an android goes against it's programming and lashes out in some way. Something causes deviancy to happen, and in this case it's Leo coming after Carl, and then Markus. As Leo starts to push him, Carl tells Markus not to do anything and to just take it. Knowing that this is unfair, Markus breaks against his programming and turns deviant. Even though he does, though, he still chooses to endure the attack, because Carl has instilled it in him that violence is wrong. Unfortunately for everyone, while this is happening, Carl has a heart attack, and Leo stops attacking Markus so Markus can go and comfort Carl as he dies. It's as Markus is crying over his 'father' dying that the police arrive, and Leo tells them that Markus killed Carl, prompting them to shoot him.

The next thing Markus knows, he's waking up in a junkyard with broken parts attached to his body and his thirium pump regulator leaking fluid. Crawling around, he replaces his legs, his pump, and one of his eyes, causing them from forever on to be one green eye and one blue eye. As he's leaving the junkyard, a dying android tells him to find Jericho, and gives him the key to finding it. Before going in search of Jericho, the final thing Markus does in the junkyard is remove his LED, the biggest signifier of an android. Getting on a train, he travels to Ferndale Station in Detroit, where he then scans the artwork around the station for clues. This leads him to find a trail that takes him to Jericho, an old abandoned ship freighter.

When Markus first gets to Jericho, he meets the main leaders, three androids by the names of Simon, Josh, and North. Talking to them leads him to realize that Jericho is not the safe haven for androids that everyone has been saying; instead, it's just a place to hide from the humans. But the androids in Jericho are dying out, and without spare parts and more blue blood to sustain the injured ones, eventually all of the androids in Jericho will die. After being healed fully by Lucy, another android, Markus talks to the Jericho leaders and tells them about his plan to go to the Cyberlife warehouse and docks and get more supplies. Both Josh and Simon are hesitant about it, but North is fully on board, which leads to the other two to agree to go.

The four of them go to the Cyberlife warehouse, and while stealing blue blood, they come across a security android named John. It's during all of this that Markus learns of a new ability of his, which is to be able to turn androids deviant with just his touch. He does this to John and to the androids in some of the shipping crates, and after being the one to steal a truck of biocomponents, Markus, the new androids, John, and the other three Jericho leaders go back to Jericho with the new shipments of biocomponents and bags of blue blood.

A little more time goes by, and Markus, while sitting on a bench, watches how humans treat androids like second class citizens. Noticing a Tech Addict article about the Strawford Tower, a news broadcasting station, Markus goes back to Jericho and talks to the others about infiltrating the tower and sending a message to the humans. Dressed in a nice suit and jacket, he goes to the tower and sees two androids and a human at the reception desk. Calling the human employee's phone, he pretends to be from a school her child goes to and tells her that her daughter is sick, and needs to go home, which gets her to leave. Now, he just deals with the android ones, and when the receptionist asks for ID, he converts her and asks for her help.

She does. Now that he's in the building, Markus goes to the bathroom, changes his clothes to a janitor android uniform, then meets North at the stairwell, where the two of them use tools to cut the glass windows. This allows them to scale the building and make it to the server room, where they distract some guards and finally make it to the room. Once there, North and Markus meet up with Simon and Josh, who are wearing broadcaster android uniforms. Inside, Markus has another important choice to make; when they hold up two human employees and make the non-deviant JB300s leave, Markus has to chance to shoot the employee that makes a run for the alarm.

Deciding not to shoot, instead he focuses on sending the message. Melting away the synthetic skin and facial markings, Markus shows the world a blank android face as he gives the message demanding freedom and rights for all androids, to the world. After the broadcast, SWAT raids the tower, and Simon gets shot. Taking him to the roof with them, Markus has to the option to shoot him; instead, he doesn't, telling him to hide, and that they'll see each other again soon, before Markus, North, and Josh jump off the roof using parachutes to get away.

Later, Markus and North go to Capitol Park to liberate more androids. Freeing ones outside of the Cyberlife store is easy, but to get to the ones inside, Markus has to take down a police drone and disable the alarm, which he does. Rallying the androids to his cause, Markus chooses to lead a non-violent demonstration, instead putting graffiti on the side of buildings and such with signs and slogans of the new android revolution. During this, he hears gunshots, and when Markus gets to where the shots were fired, he sees an android holding a gun stolen from two police officers, holding the officers at gunpoint, and North tells him that they shot some androids. The androids began to cry out for vengeance, while the officers ask for forgiveness and mercy. Markus chooses to spare the officer Chris Miller and his partner, saying that "An eye for an eye and the whole world goes blind".

Again, later, Markus finds himself on a roof of an abandoned bar near Jericho, and he finds time to play the piano. North arrives, and the two talk, sharing their memories by way of interfacing with their hands. Markus is surprised to learn of her past, and it changes his opinion of her in an even more positive light. Going back to Jericho, Markus sees Simon again, and the two men hug. After, the group heads to Woodward Mall Center, to free more androids and rally to send a message to the humans again. More and more androids are converted by Markus and join them in their demonstration, where they block the street, and even overwhelm the police that are already there. The officers call for more back up, though, and more police show up to stop the protest. Markus chooses for the group to demonstrate peacefully, but when the soldiers arrive and tell them to disperse or they'll shoot, Markus chooses to sacrifice himself. He steps out there on his own, only to be shot. The only reason he is still around now is that John, the security guard Markus had recruited back when they just needed blood and biocomponents, attacks the police, sacrificing himself for Markus so the others can drag him back with them, and the demonstration ends.

After the bad ending to the demonstration, Markus recuperates in Jericho, observing the refugees when an android named Kara comes to him, asking about tickets and a passport to get her and a young human child to Canada. He's able to persuade Kara to stay in Jericho, and asks her why she cares about the girl even though she's human.Kara responds with "She needs me. And I need her. It's as simple as that." This has a great affect on Markus, though he tries not to show it, but it does validate to him that the peaceful revolution is the right way to go.

After talking to Kara, Markus holds a meeting with North, Josh, and Simon, where he talks about how he has no regrets about anything that has happened. Everyone but North leaves him after that, and the two of them talk and connect again with their hands. It's at this stage that Markus and North become lovers, and the two of them kiss for the first time. She also tells him about a dirty bomb that an android left for them, but Markus declines to use it. And then in walks Connor, the deviant hunter tasked to find him and kill him, who threatens Markus with a gun to his face and talk of deviancy. Luckily (in Markus' case, luckily), he is able to talk to Connor and while he doesn't get a chance to touch him to cause him to become deviant, the two of them talk long enough, and Markus has the right things to say, so that Connor himself becomes deviant, joining their cause.

Now that Connor is on their side, he warns Markus that the humans are coming to attack Jericho. Understanding that Connor must have been the one to tell them how to find Jericho, he decides to trust him anyway and the two flee the area together. They meet up with North, and Markus tells her to tell everyone to escape, and that he is going to blow up Jericho to save them all. Trying to get to the belly of the ship, Markus runs and hides from soldiers, seeing them hurt androids, and androids hurt them back in droves. He also sees Josh fighting a soldier, and he jumps and intervenes, saving Josh. Markus does eventually find the bombs and prepares to blow up Jericho; before he can use them, three soldiers find him, and he fights them, killing one in the process, and then setting up the bombs and getting the hell out of there. He meets up with North, Josh, Simon, and Connor, and all of them escape Jericho before it blows.

Now that Jericho is gone, Markus needed some guidance. Unfortunately, the person that he would have gone to for guidance is dead, so he goes to the next best place he can find him: his grave. He heads to the cemetery where he's buried, and he goes and asks Carl for advice, and tells him how much he misses him. As Markus leaves, he sees Leo heading to the grave, and the two of them exchange a look before heading in their separate directions.

All the remaining androids are holed up in an abandoned church in Detroit. Markus kept thinking about the whole situation that they were in, and the dirty bomb switch that they do still have, and he spends some time talking to Kara. She tells him to save their people, and he agrees to. He then also talks to Connor. Knowing that Connor was the one who got the police and army to attack Jericho, he still decides to trust him and not take any revenge against him for what happened.

And then Connor brings up Cyberlife headquarters, and how many androids they have there. How it would shift the balance of power in their favor, and he can get in there and get them. Markus knew that this was suicide though, and told him so, but Connor insisted. So Markus let him go, telling him to be careful, before going to make a speech to his people.

Character Personality: Markus might be an android, but hoo boy does he have a personality. While androids themselves aren't supposed to have much of a personality beyond a basic understanding of the phrase, Markus was raised in the home of an artist who interacted with him in such a way as to help him become better at expressing himself then the average android. Carl encouraged Markus to learn new things, and try out things he'd never tried before. This leads to him learning how to play music, and play chess, but it also helps him to learn that he likes doing those things. Carl, his master and father figure, helped develop Markus' soul and in that regard helped to give him freedom, something that he continues on in the same vein when he starts to break the other androids free from their bondage-like programming.

Becoming an android activist, Markus has a strong sense of right and wrong, especially when it comes to what is right and wrong in the life of an android. The one large downside to the life that Markus was living with Carl is that it was a very sheltered life. He's compared it to living in a bubble, where, while you know things are terrible for other people, you don't actually know how bad because you've never experienced any of that for yourself. When Markus was shot and dismembered, it was a very hard wake up call to what happens to the oppressed when no one cares about their rights.

He is charismatic. Maybe this was shaped by the kinds of books that Carl had him read (Shakespeare, Plato, etc), or maybe this was because of all the talks he had with his father figure, but Markus is very well spoken and a personable person. The kind of person that you want to talk to, and who can sit down and converse on all matters of subjects with you for hours on end. It's part of his programming, yes, but there's an extra oomph to it that Markus has and other androids don't. He's also kind, which is shown in his other interactions with the other androids, just by the way he talks to them, but also by way of him helping everyone whenever he has a chance to. That's enough for some people, right, being kind, charismatic, personable, all those good qualities, right?

Humans aren't only good qualities, though, and the same can be said for an android. Markus has a problem with being a little too reckless in his way of doing things. Rather then plan for the future, he tends to take things as they come, and just seeing where things will go, rather then put too much stock into it. He's always volunteering to do things alone, which means he doesn't really rely on anyone else but himself. This is most likely a PTSD result from being told by his owner to do something he didn't see as fair or right, and so now he believes that while he can trust people, he can't always rely on them to protect him if he needs it. It's also why he puts himself on the line so many times, when it would be easier and less problematic to flee or hide, he instead goes out onto the front line and doesn't expect anyone to come with him.

What's interesting is that for all of these traits that Markus has, he also has the exact opposite ones within himself. When Markus first arrives in Jericho, Lucy says that "He had it all, and lost it all. He's seen hell, and now hell lives in him. He is a being of half-light and half darkness. Which will prevail?". While Markus is now a compassionate, kind, and peaceful leader, he has the abilities in him to become a truly terrible tyrant. It might not seem like he has to struggle to make the right decisions in front of people, but there are times that it's harder for him to say no to violence then it might look like. He's not a violent person by nature, but he won't run from a fight.

Powers and Abilities: Markus is an android, so he's got a little bit more power then the average human; little bit faster reflexes, more strength then usual. He can be hurt badly enough that he would shut down, though, as he is only made of plastic and has a fluid in him that's similar to blood (will shut down if he's shot multiple times, etc). But as an android, Markus doesn't need to do things like eat and sleep, though he needs time to recharge his power every so often.

What he can also do is connect wirelessly to computer devices (phones, laptops, consoles), as well as being able to hack into almost any electronic device. He can scan things with his eyes to analyze them, taking in several things at once in just one glance. He can use the analyze tool to see possible future scenarios (an example is finding the right way to get to the top of a building in only a few seconds).

He's proficient in handling weapons, and hand to hand combat. He can also paint and play the piano. Oh, and he can change his skin and hair color, and voice if he wants to. Just for kicks.

[The video shows a young man with two colored eyes, blue and green, looking into the screen.] Thank you to everyone who linked me to the guides last time, they were both helpful to me in getting to know this place a little more.

[He smiles.] And talking to people was even more helpful, so thank you for that. Communication is key, between people, to understanding each other. Some people think that just observation will be able to tell you all about someone, but it's my belief that talking, in all forms, is what helps the most. [Pauses.]

Sorry, not what I wanted to get to. My question today involves Bending. Or... it's more wondering if those who are better at the more advanced Bending could help me out with something. I'm looking to get a piano, but it's a little out of my reach right now. So if someone were willing to give me a hand... [Shrugs.] It doesn't need to be in tune; I can do that myself. I'd even be willing to make some kind of trade, if need be.

Third Person:

Waking. That was the word of the day, so to speak, and maybe there was something about it that was just something people did. All people, regardless of race, religion, even species. Markus had woken in several different ways by this point, most of them in good, but strange ways, but there was something different about waking in Nautilus. He didn't feel any different, not the way that he had when he first woke up after being shot.

Back in that junkyard, where survival was the name of the game, not so much do anything else with your newfound life. Not freedom; it wasn't freedom yet. Maybe it was a kind of freedom that you could have here, in this new place he was in, but true freedom wouldn't happen until you were free in the first place that made you a slave. Markus needed to get back to Detroit. He wanted to get back to Detroit, get back to the people, his people, who needed him, and that couldn't do anything if he wasn't there to help.

That wasn't true, though. As much as it might be nice to think that things ride or die with you, Markus knew that the revolution could still happen without him being there. It could still take place, there was North, or Simon, either one of them could take over if need be. The most problematic thing with thinking that, though, was knowing that the revolution wouldn't be happening the way that you wanted it to go. He could trust any of the other androids with his life, but he couldn't necessarily trust North not to let things turn violent without him being there, nor could he trust the others to turn up the heat when it was needed.

Being a leader required such a balancing act, it was tiring sometimes. Markus felt tired down to his thirium pump, and while he knew that androids were not supposed to feel tired, he knew that he felt it. Felt the pressure on him, constantly, to be one way versus the other.

He needed an outlet. He needed some way to let out this feeling he had, all of these feelings he had, in a way that wasn't destructive, that wasn't going to hurt himself or anyone else. If he had a piano, he could vent some frustration out on it. If he had some paints, he could close his eyes and pretend that Carl was there.

Maybe this Bending thing was the way to go. If he couldn't get home right now, then putting his focus into something that could help him... he'd get home. He had to get home. But at the same time, Markus wasn't entirely sure he was that upset about not being able to get back to Detroit immediately.

And maybe he could find somewhere that had a piano, so he could get some of this energy out. Bending a piano seemed like a little too much for a beginner, but he could play the hell out of it if he could find it.
